Super Rad Friends, Please Help Me Recover from Top Surgery!

That’s right, it’s top surgery time. A boobie removie. A teat yeet, if you will. After years of desire and angsty gender feels, I’m finally taking the plunge and will be having gender affirming surgery on January 31st, 2019. It’s super exciting, and I am super fortunate that my insurance is covering the full cost of surgery. A double mastecomy don’t come cheap, so knowing that I won’t have that financial hurdle to leap over is a big relief. WooHoo!

Top surgery is a major operation, that is for all intents a purposes, an amputation. Healing and recovering takes about 6-8 weeks, and post-op wound care requires access to medical supplies that are very expensive and not covered by insurance. One of the biggest expenses is silicone tape and gel, which must be applied for several weeks in order to support the healing incisions and reduce the formation of excessive scar tissue. I will also need things like a post-op binder, a wedge pillow to help keep me elevated in bed the first couple of weeks after surgery, and several other things to assist with mobility limitations to help me navigate and accomplish basic tasks and self-care while doing my best T-Rex impersonation for the first several weeks. I will also be heavily reliant on others for transportation during that time, and want to be able to provide gas money as necessary.

Collectively, these things will cost several hundred dollars that I do not have at my disposal. Additionally, because my job centers around manual labor, I also have to take about 2 months off of work. And while I am preemptively budgeting, things are going to be pretty tight financially. I am SO pumped about surgery, but when I think about the cost of after care, it’s intimidating and stressful.

For your love and assistance in the form of dollars. I dont like having to ask folks for money, but I also know that I have a lot of amazing people in my life who believe in the good will of mutual aid. I’m not entirely sure exactly how much I will need, so I set it at $1,000. Anything that is leftover afterwards I plan on paying forward to other trans folks in need.
